I Wish Someone Would've Warned Me About These BIG FEELINGS

Jen Hatmaker

I quit my job to stay home when I had my second baby just after her big brother turned two. Those first few months as a SAHM to two were, let’s say, mildly traumatizing (I am underselling this). I used to call my husband Brandon at 1:30pm and ask, Are you almost done with work? and he was all It’s 1:30 and I was like YOU DIDN’T ANSWER THE FREAKING QUESTION. ARE YOU ON YOUR WAY HOME OR SHOULD I CALL 911 TO COME HELP ME MANAGE THESE TWO BABIES????? Because no one told us not to, we added a third two years later and were ruled by a tiny army we created.
Three babies in four years.
It was a whole thing.

These pics are terrible because it was the late 90's and THIS WAS THE BEST WE COULD DO. Also, we cut our original pictures and scrapbooked them all. I need therapy.

I wish I would have known how new babies make all feelings MORE (and this from a girl who was already fairly high on melodrama): more thrill, more love, more anguish, more adoration, more fear, more gratitude, more doubt, more crazy. You may have been an emotionally sturdy professional just a minute ago, but a newborn takes your heart and mind, squishes them into pulp in her fat little baby hands, and turns you into a woman face down in despair over a Subaru commercial. Who is this sloppy woman in the mirror? Good lord, put on some clean pants and get your crap together!
I remember a watershed moment the second year of staying home with the littles. Brandon came home from his glamorous job (“glamour” here meaning “out of the house”) and found me at the kitchen table, staring blankly like a poet. Or perhaps a serial killer. The kids? Not sure. I want to say they were…upstairs? Or in the backyard? They were somewhere on the property. My gosh, I wasn’t in the FBI.
Brandon, speaking slowly, like to a lunatic:
“Um, hi. You, uh, you okay there?”
“Fine. Everything is fine. Except that I’ve turned dumb. It’s fine.”
“What?”
“Dumb. Now you have a dumb wife. I used to be smart. I watched CNN. Did you know that I went to college and graduated with honors?”
“I did know that because I met and married you there. Remember?”
“Well, sorry for your loss, because now I’m dumb. I sing the theme song to Blue’s Clues when the kids aren’t even around. That’s what I do now. I eat their leftover bread crusts off the floor. I can’t remember our Vice President. I told our neighbor I was 29.”
“You’re 27.”
“Thank you FOR CONFIRMING THE DIAGNOSIS, MR. FANCY JOB.”
Some days were very much like that. Raising the littles was sometimes the most frustrating, boring, numbing, exhausting, lonely job I’d ever had. But also, opposite.
The Feels were all big, including the good ones. As I type this, I can literally recall how their chubby little cheeks felt against my lips; I kissed them hundreds of times a day. I remember exactly how my heart surged seeing a smiling, white-haired baby standing at the crib rails, squealing at the sight of me. I precisely remember all their first steps; I was there, cheering and laughing and holding out my arms to the first son at 12-months, the girl tot at 13-months, and of course the “spirited” baby at 9-months.
When I could push through the Big Exhaustion and Big Guilt, I tapped into something more healthy: Big Pride. Every night with three precocious littles fed, bathed, read to, rocked, snuggled, and tucked into bed, I felt like some sort of damn warrior princess. Who can handle this many babies and toddlers all day?? APPARENTLY I CAN. (And if I managed to also have sex that night? I felt like a viable candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for my contributions to humanity.)
You can too, Young Mama. The new mom brain can be a real enemy, saying you are not enough and falling apart and a hot mess. But look at your children. Their shoes are on the correct feet, at least one has combed hair, those round bellies are clearly well-fed, and peek in their little eyes: lot of light in there, Mom. Those are the eyes of loved, cherished, cared-for babies. You’re doing it. You are raising whole humans, healthy and happy and safe.
Can I tell you what happens next?
First, you will get your groove back. Your dumbness will abate. Your brain returns and it comes back wiser and way less judgmental. (Except for that older lady in the store as my toddler pitched an epic fit for Count Chocula cereal: “My children never behaved that way.” HOW NICE FOR YOU AND MAY I OFFER MY CONDOLENCES TO YOUR DAUGHTER-IN-LAW.) Not us, gals. We get it now. We love all the young moms behind us. We buy their wine on airplanes and encourage them in Target as their tot takes off his pants and streaks down the aisle. We tell them how our 2-year-old once bit her Sunday School teacher and drew blood and assure them easier days are ahead.
And they are!
Well, easier in most ways. Guess what? Kids grow up and pee-pee on the potty! They make their own sandwiches! They wash their own hair! They go to school for seven hours a day. I’m serious. The nonstop physical parenting slows down. The daily marathon relents. They stop biting their teachers.
But I have some bad news too. These little ones? You fall even more madly in love as every year passes. That part doesn’t get any better. Subaru commercials are still out to kill us. The Big Feelings stay big, especially the tender ones. Your brain becomes useful again, but the kids grow up and you cannot stop it. That beautiful 3-year-old you’re tucking into bed? Blink and you’ll be sending him to Driver’s Ed. I swear to the heavens.
Let me tell you about Big Feelings: my oldest son, the one who took his first step into my arms at 12-months, is wrapping up his junior year. One more year and he launches. I can hardly speak of it. It went so fast. People told me it would and I didn’t believe them, but here we are in the home stretch; the finish line is near. The Family Years are waning and it literally takes my breath. (Brandon says they are just growing up, not dying, but I’ll cry about it IF I WANT TO.)

I’ll tell you something most moms don’t: teenagers are mostly awesome. Sure, you also want to strangle them of course, but they are funny and smart and interesting, and this teen stage is totally my jam. It’s not all great (this exact minute my husband and son are inspecting a fence he plowed over hot-rodding through puddles with his best friend last night), but no stage of parenting is all great. Young Mama, set that future fear aside. You will adore that baby when he is one and eight and thirteen and donning his cap and gown.
So what I wish I would have known before bringing that first son home? The baby years are short, kind of like five minutes…underwater. It doesn’t seem like it, but he will go on to kindergarten then read the Harry Potter series then join the “ninja club” in middle school then play high school soccer and rent his first tux for prom and run over a fence in his truck, and near the end, you will hit your knees and thank God that you got to parent this kid, that he was yours, that he walked into your arms at one and will walk out of them at eighteen, but my gosh…what a gift. I wouldn’t trade one day of Big Feelings, because the good ones far outweigh the hard ones, and the one that endures above all else is Big, Big, Big Love.
“There goes my baby,
Like the sun falling out of the clear blue sky.
There goes my baby,
Bye-bye, Baby, good-bye…”

Best day ever

I can honestly say - today was one of my best days ever. I hope it leaves some lasting memory on Leiland but if not its ok.

Started out with snuggly boys in bed - love that time together.

Anna came over and watched Leiland while I took Owen out to lunch with my good friend Kim. It was great because without him there we could actually talk and catch up. Then add that I had an incredible french dip (been craving them lately) just topped it off. Owen fell asleep in my arms which gave us even more hang out time uninterrupted.

Owen fell asleep on the way home and transferred to his crib nicely then proceeded to sleep another 2 hours. I was able to run to get gas in the truck by myself (thanks to Anna being here). When Leiland woke we played a bit then Owen woke and nursed. After that we decided its the perfect day to go play outside. Its a gorgeous sunny 40 degree day - so off we went. We build a snowman finally (don't judge) and then did some sledding. Absolutely perfect. When Owen was done he and Anna headed in while I continued to sled with Leiland. Thats been so hard when its just me and the kids. But we made it work today.

Now please don't judge me on my snowman building skills. Keep in mind that I haven't built a snowman in enough years that the last one my parents probably helped me with. I honestly don't remember building one. I remember building igloos - and we kicked butt at those - but not sure about snowmen. So yes probably a good 15-20 years since my last snowman. We will just add that to the skills I need to improve on as a parent - along with my amazing pumping carving skills. Thankfully Tim has those down pat.

It was getting late so I came in to make dinner while Anna went out with him to play more. Perfect. We ate an incredible chicken dinner )the most organic meal I have even made) and took Anna home. Where we drove into another beautiful sunset. They have been stunning lately.

When we got back home it was late so I quickly nursed Owen and he went down to bed then I was able to snuggle Leiland. He was so happy and I kept reminding him how proud I was for how good he did getting ready for bed. No fight and no repeatedly telling him to do x, y, z.

Perfect day. Couldn't have been any better (except if daddy was here with us).

11 month update

Wow one more month and he's not a baby anynore. The last month I've seen him change SO much.

So

Size 12m clothes with a few 18m in there. Some 12m too small but many of the pants are huge. Then a lot of 18m fit.
Size 3 diapers
Size 4.5 shoes
18.2 pounds

New skills:
Clapping
Dancing
Pointing
High fives
Early walking
Turning around to get out of bed

No words. He's trying to say hi and mom. Sometimes tries saying more. On occasion he will sign milk but not often.

Got two new teeth when we visited california. Now has a total of 5 teeth. Two bottom three too. His left side seem to be ahead of his right.

He is starting to walk. He will take 5 or so steps before diving. He does it all on his own too meaning he doesn't need to be walking to one of us. He just tries to walk. It's so adorable.

He's definitely getting big and growing. He takes a sippy cup great no matter the contents. He likes almond milk as a practice drink because pumping is pointless these days.

His favorite toys are anything automotive (cars, trucks, trains, planes), balls, music, and his big brother Leiland. He is crazy about him. However if Leiland tells him no it takes something owen cries and screams as though Leiland hurt him. Little stinker this boy is.

He starting to like more table food but is very picky. I still offer the purée foods because they are on my freezer lol. Once gone I won't make anymore before we move. Then I'll make pouches when he gets a little better at them.

Sleeping better is off and on. Some days he does great but teething definitely impacts that. I've been trying to nurse to sleep less and lay him down awake more often. It's harder with Leiland always around and ruling him up. He fights it when there are things to see and do.

Owen has two bad habits. Hiring and biting. Because he likes sucking his fingers so much he goes back and forth from breast to fingers and back to breast. So when nursing he may relatch 3-6 times. Well now when he's done he just bites me. Not cool. We're working on it and it's getting better. He also likes to bite Leiland. As for the hitting it's usually out of excitement. Not worried about it yet bi just tell him to be nice and be soft. Give loves.

That's all for now. I can't believe he is so close to one already.

Vacation, flu, first tooth, and daddy's home

Oh boy. So Leiland, owen, and I set out for Georgia on December 27th. Stayed in a hotel half way. Leiland wasn't feeling well and seemed feverish. We swam before bed then in the middle of the night the fire alarms woke us. I quickly poked my head out as most guests were doing. No clue what was happening I put shoes on, put my sweater on with keys in the pocket, grabbed the boys (owens pants he crawled out of), and Leilands shoes. When we got to the lobby it appeared there wasn't a fire so we stayed in the lobby. Fire trucks arrived and firemen in full dress filled the lobby and halls. After about 50 minutes they got the alarms off and we were able to go back to bed. Exhausted. Owen nursed and both boys went to bed. Leiland was burning up though. So in the morning we did breakfast and found a Walmart. By then his body felt like it had cooled off some. I got a thermometer and tylenol and his temperature was 101.2.

So off we went to drive another 6 1/2 hours. Overall they both did great in the car. We arrived a bit late but no biggie. Boys were so excited to see grandma, grandpa, and auntie Nicole. We hung out for two days not doing too much. One day we tried to be adventurous. It was raining and we wanted to go to hobby lobby and Kroger. When we left Leiland reminded us that he wanted to go to the park and we said we would if it stopped raining. So detour to the park. Right as I was walking to the swings I got a whiff of owen and his poopy diaper. So back to the car. I popped the trunk and changed him. Put the trunk down (using the button on the door) and immediately realize my keys are inside. Shoot. So I immediately call usaa roadside assistance and we wait for someone to come u lock my doors. Oops.

On New Year's Eve at 4am we got ready and headed to the airport to get Tim. We arrived an hour before him however couldn't find the international area puckup. We finally found him and Leiland was SO happy. It's adorable seeing my boys all back together.

The next morning (New Years day) we celebrated Christmas. I brought some of Leilands gifts to open up here. He had a good time and played a bit. We did a whole Christmas dinner that was amazing. So nice to be able to celebrate with Tim home and his family. Leiland is loving his grandma and grandpa.

Slowly but shirly Leiland starts feeling a little better while the rest of us start getting more sick. Grandma got hit pretty hard and I got really bad body aches. Tim got it too. I've now spent 4 nights sleeping on the couch because owens been up crying so much. Two nights ago I finally got him down and went to bed at 1130. At some point he woke and joined us in bed. Wouldn't settle so I came to the living room. I never got back to sleep. He tossed, turned, and fought all night. He seemed pretty hot so I was giving tylenol and Motrin because with just motrin he was still up about 103°F. On both alternating he would sit around 100-101°F. Owen has also been teething. I've watched as his gums began to swell and redden. Well yesterday sure enough his first tooth popped through. It's his bottom left. Today it's not as red and swollen but I do see the other bottom tooth looks like it coming soon and his top two look red and swollen.

Tim still feels sick and so do I. Last night was a little better with owen and I hoping tonight is better then last. I need sleep. This girl is exhausted.

I don't know if we have the flue but that would be my guess. Poor owen has it the worst but I think it's because he's teething too. Poor kiddo.

Owens 7.5 month update

Really behind on the updates lately. Missed 6 months so thought I'd catch up with 7 months, and here we are 17 days late. To top it all off he's gone crazy getting mobile.

So he has been army crawling since just before Tim deployed in late September. The other day (14 November) he finally connected the dots and began crawling on all 4's. For several weeks he was doing 2-3 steps with all 4 crawling but all of a sudden he just did it. It was so cute too. He was in the middle of the room, shifted to all 4, and started crawling to Anna. I cheered him on and he just kept going. I was SO excited and snagged a cell phone video of it. Then I changed his diaper and left him over there and he did it again, all the way to Anna. Leiland was excited and cheering him one, calling Owen to him too. Owen started then dodged him to crawl around Leiland to get to Anna. It was hilarious, and Leiland was rather bummed to say the least.

Now that he has been crawling a few days he doesn't do all 4 100% of the time but probably 60-70% of the time he will get up one 4. In the past couple weeks he has quickly started pulling up on things too. Today I set hi outside the bathroom so I could help Leiland with his hands and teeth - less than a minute he was standing up holding onto the exersaucer. He tries to do more than he can just yet and falls over a few times a day. Usually he doesn't cry too much with bumping his head but this week it seems to be getting to him more than usual.

I've been told and on occasion experienced times where learning new things interrupts sleep - but he seems to be doing ok. Some nights he will wake a few hours after going to bed to nurse again, then back to sleep. This is usually anywhere between 9-11pm most nights when he wakes. Id say he is waking at night like this 2-3 times a week. And most nights he slept till 8am. Sometimes he wakes at 6-7am to come nurse and go back to sleep in my bed. Once this week he woke around 2am but went back to his crib at 230 and slept till the morning. So overall pretty good at sleeping. The few wake ups aren't really bothering me too much since he just eats and goes to sleep.

Owen is a dream when it comes to sleep at home. He goes in his crib and goes to sleep with little or no fuss at all. He usually naps around 10am and 2pm. Bed is between 7-8pm most nights. Being out and about definitely throws that all off but he still goes to bed so nicely. I usually play his little elephant with lullabies and put the star turtle on. He might fuss when I am still standing there but once the door is closed he just rolls over and goes to sleep.

Right now Owen is eating 2x a day. I try to feed him breakfast and dinner, but we are pretty close to adding a 3rd session. He seems like he wants more and freaks if you are eating and he isn't. He prefers puree food over solids just yet. I can give him banana and he just spits it out unless its in his little boon silicone feeder. He loves it in there, but not as pieces. I gave him olives and bits of breadstick and 90% made it to the flood. He puts it in his mouth and spits it out. He likes puffs but many get spit back out. He doesn't like to chew on food at all. But he likes purees and he eats quite a lot of it. He is a bit of a picket eater too. He HATES peas, peaches, sweet potatoes, carrots, and green beans. Peas are the worst, he actually acts like he might puke. Sometimes he does ok if I mix them with other foods, but Im not pushing it right now. He likes yogurt a lot but I think it makes him puke more. Or I just notice it more because it smells FOUL when he pukes after yogurt. I make most of our baby food and buy what I can't find to make myself. I also like bought food for when we are out and about  sometimes its just easier because Im a terrible planner some days.

Owen is still nursing pretty good. He's had a few bottles the last few weeks. One for me to go to the dentist, and another at a birthday party for convenience (and so grandma could feed him). I nurse whenever he wants, but he gets SO distracted, even at home. Leiland talking or playing makes him stop and not want to go back. I used to time it to nurse in the car, but now the steering wheel is too distracting. He will only nurse when out and about it seems when he is tired. He won't go to sleep but he will stop moving long enough to get some milk. I don't ever feel like he empties me or I feel like I don't have enough milk for him because he doesn't seem to nurse a whole lot these days.

With him not nursing a lot Im worried my period will be back soon, but so far still nothing. Weight is stagnant at 180 - where I started when I got pregnant.

Owen still has no teeth and isn't saying any words just yet. But he is starting to babble a little more. He does however wave now and its so adorable. He also started hitting all surfaces to hear the sound they make. We are using baby sign language and last night he was trying to make a sign with his hands, it was so precious.

Love my little Owen and his crazy little personality. He goes non stop during the day. He seriously does not sit still and cuddle. He just wants to be down playing. If I am holding him he is doing flips to reach something or trying to hang upside down. He is uber ticklish. The other day in the bath just ringing out the washcloth over his back made him squirm.

I don't know what he weighs, but he is something around 18 pounds would be my guess. He is in 12 month clothes and wore an 18 month onsie the other day. Stop growing so fast little man. And he is in size 3 diapers still.

So proud

Tonight I am so proud of Owen. We have been working lately on him going to bed on his own and he does really great with it most times. Its been really hard to be super consistent because he shares with Leiland and I can't let him lay in there and fuss if Leiland is sleeping already. But every chance I get I put him in awake. He usually gets all happy to see all the animals in the bedding then fusses for a few minutes before I go in and just reassure him he is ok, then he will toss around fussing a bit and usually fall asleep. He never really cries unless he is WAY overtired but talks in a disgruntled tone.

Tonight (after a long day at the air show) he took a bath with Leiland then played with Anna a bit. I got Leiland dressed and he slept in my bed because Anna is staying over and is in his bed. SO then I notice Owen is indeed tired - no surprise - so I take him from the living room where he is playing and laughing with Anna, lay him in bed, and within 5-6 minutes he has rolled over and fallen asleep. No fussing at all.

Most likely he was just super tired - but either way I will take it - he went to bed all on his own. Last night he also slept through the night. Went to bed great then slept all night - crazy.

He's getting too big on me. Love him though. Leiland was much older when he started going to bed on his own - Owens only 5 months but he is a finger sucker - so that seems to really help. YAY Owen.

5 month update

Holy cow - how is this little man 5 months old already? Some days it feels like it came out of nowhere then others I feel like he's been here forever. Life is not the same as it was before him - its new and so special with him as an addition. We all just love our Owen and his awesome spirit.

So rolling is simple and easy to do these days - every direction and all over the floor. Consequently he does the same in the crib. ALL OVER the place lol. But thats ok - he has fun with it. However this means he is not very safe in my bed anymore. He can squirm to the end of the bed SO quickly.

Owen has decided to get mad at me every time he sees anyone eating real food. He launches his body to plates of food and gets his hands in and on EVERYTHING he can reach. Not cool dude. But only a few more weeks and we will be starting solids.

He is sitting really well but has no real interest in it, he always goes to his belly within a minute or two. He manages to scoot backwards but hasn't figured out crawling just yet. He pushes up on his arms really well and tries to pull his legs under but if I try to place him on all 4's he gets mad and instantly flails outward. On his tummy he looks like he is swimming. Its adorable.

He still refuses all pacifiers but still loves his two fingers - everyone likes to comment on them. Most people ask if he's teething when no its just that he likes to suck his fingers. Its adorable as could be but I do not look forward to breaking the habit down the road. On a good note though he has taken 3 bottles in the last 2ish weeks. I gave the first one and he played for 20 minutes then finally took it. The next day we had a date night while he stayed with grandma - played a bit again but still took it. Then yesterday I gave another (because I would have to toss it soon otherwise) and he didn't even play but just drank it. The two I gave him he fell asleep to as well.

Because he's taken a few I have pumped a few times. I try to not over pump but I have been leaking lately so yesterday after he took the bottle I pumped. It seems to be mostly my right side that leaks, but they have both been known to embarrass me. Maybe I need some new breast pads.

Sleeping wise Owen is doing pretty good - he naps 2-3 times a day. 1/2 the time or so he lays in there awake and falls asleep on his own. At night he wakes once in the early morning and comes in my bed to nurse and sleep a little more. I think its usually between 4-6am that he wakes but I am usually really tired so I couldn't say for sure.

Lately Owen doesn't seem to be as talkative - not sure why but he just isn't talking too much. He drools insane amounts but still no teeth. He loves Leiland - man those two are so sweet together and Owen just adores his brother so much already (I know thats pretty common with siblings lol). He is the happiest baby I know - so easy to coax a smile. He will grab your face and try to eat you if you get close enough. LOVES to play with hair and will sit on your lap and just watch whats happening around him.

Right now Owen nurses every 3-4 hours. Usually right at 3 hours. He nurses just one side every feeding and for about 6-12 minutes. Sometimes he falls asleep and will go about 20 minutes but not always. He uses his top arm to cover his eyes up and never looks at me. If anyone is talking (especially Leiland) he can't stand to nurse and will just try to roll over and flip upside down in order to see what he is missing.

We've just started introducing a few baby signs. I use all done and milk through the days. I am reteaching Leiland as well so he can use them and understand what Owen is saying if Owen takes to them. Owen is also still on reflux meds. He can't miss more then a dose here and there or he is puking a significant amount more and it will take a few days to get back to his normal. I am taking him in tomorrow to weight him just to see if the dosing should be up any more because I always want to make sure he has the right dose. He is still on the zantac though. Leiland was moved off this much sooner than Owen - but I have always believed Owen's wasn't as bad as Leilands was.

Thats in for now. Now a few pictures. Sorry if they are out of order or not from month 4-5. Trying over here.
